International Bicycle Day: Figures and Infrastructure to Boost Two-Wheeler Usage.

by Location Taroudant

On June 3rd, we celebrate World Bicycle Day, recognized in appreciation of the unique and versatile nature of this mode of transportation used for over two centuries. As part of the strategy of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), aligned with the Agenda 2030, the Royal Moroccan Cycling Federation (FRMC) commemorates this day in accordance with the decision of the United Nations.

Fostering a Culture of Cycling in Moroccan Society

The main objective of this day is to foster a culture of cycling within Moroccan society. As a simple, affordable, reliable, environmentally friendly, and sustainable mode of transportation, cycling offers numerous benefits for promoting the well-being of all individuals. In this regard, local and national bike rides will be organized to raise awareness about the benefits of cycling and the importance of enhancing physical and mental health, as well as fostering the development of this culture in Morocco.

Growing Success of Bicycle Usage in Morocco

It is noteworthy that the use of bicycles is currently experiencing growing popularity in Morocco, both for sports purposes and daily commuting. Two out of four Moroccans engage in cycling, either for their daily transportation needs, particularly among high school students, or for sports activities at least once a week.

Raising Awareness and Strengthening Infrastructure

Since 2018, the International Day of the Bicycle has served as a reminder of its numerous benefits and has called upon governments to enhance its role in development programs while improving road safety through appropriate infrastructure.

Need for Cycling Infrastructure

In 2023, Morocco already had a few hundred bike lanes in cities such as Rabat, Errachidia, Taroudant, and Agadir. However, they are still insufficient compared to the demands and expectations of bicycle users. Additional efforts need to be made to further develop bike lanes by 2025. It is also important to note that the distribution of bike lane infrastructure remains unequal across the country. For example, out of 100 kilometers of roads in Marrakech, only three kilometers are designated for bicycles.

Ambitious Plans for the Future

That is why ambitious plans such as the "Bike Plan" need to be implemented in regions such as Rabat, Agadir, Tangier, Fez, or Oujda, in order to triple the daily use of this mode of transportation by 2024 compared to 2022.

The Benefits of Bicycle Paths

Bike lanes and dedicated cycling zones will not only help protect human lives but also reduce traffic congestion, decrease energy consumption, and preserve the health of Moroccans. The United Nations has recently emphasized the importance of cycling in the post-COVID-19 ecological transition. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has also highlighted that investments in favor of pedestrians and cyclists can save lives, protect the environment, and alleviate poverty.

Cycling as an Act of Environmental Protection

By choosing to ride a bicycle, thousands of people are spreading goodness and positivity worldwide every day. Whether it's for personal reasons, environmental concerns, or to help others, cycling is an active and sustainable mode of transportation that brings numerous benefits. It is essential to give visibility to these environmental protection efforts and celebrate them globally, highlighting cyclists and the many advantages of this practice.
